Palestinian Rights Group Accuses Israel of Plotting to Assassinate Barghouti in Detention

A Palestinian rights group has issued a warning accusing Israel of planning to assassinate jailed Palestinian leader Barghouti. The charge underscores growing fears over the safety of high-profile Palestinian detainees, with the group alleging deliberate targeting by Israeli authorities.

BETHLEHEM, WEST BANK – DECEMBER 24: A Palestinian man pass the graffiti showing Marwan Barghouti, a Palestinian imprisoned politician on December 24, 2023 in Bethlehem, West Bank. Last month, Christian Palestinian leaders here called off public Christmas celebrations, citing the effects of the ongoing war in Gaza. Regarded by Christians as the birthplace of Jesus, Bethlehem is usually bustling with foreign tourists this time of year, with streets full of holiday decoration and vendors selling ornaments and festive figurines. Israel’s war against Hamas that was sparked by the Oct. 7 attacks has also made life more volatile in the West Bank. Israeli forces here have stepped up raids on alleged militants, police have clashed with protesters, and there has been a rise in violent attacks on Palestinians by Israeli settlers. A Palestinian rights group has sounded the alarm, asserting that Israel is planning to assassinate jailed Palestinian leader Barghouti. The organization expressed serious concern regarding the conditions surrounding Barghouti’s detention and his continued imprisonment, pointing to what it describes as deliberate and organized intent by Israeli authorities to eliminate him.

According to the group, the warning is based on information it deems credible and consistent with patterns of systemic targeting of Palestinian prisoners. Barghouti, a prominent leader currently held by Israeli forces, is viewed by many across the occupied territories as a central figure within the Palestinian resistance movement. His continued imprisonment has remained a point of tension in discussions around detainee treatment, prisoner rights, and political struggle.

The rights group denounced what it termed as ongoing violations against Palestinian detainees, particularly those with political significance. It stated that the latest revelations indicate a serious escalation in threats facing Palestinian leaders held in Israeli jails, and warned that any harm that may come to Barghouti would have severe implications on the Palestinian community and resistance discourse.

In its statement, the group called on international human rights organizations to investigate the alleged plot and to intervene to prevent any move by Israeli forces to carry out an assassination. It emphasized that Palestinian prisoners are protected under international conventions and that targeted killings inside prison represent grave breaches of humanitarian law.

Meanwhile, advocates and legal representatives working with the rights group have condemned what they describe as a policy of silencing Palestinian resistance figures inside detention centers. They accused Israel of manipulating carceral settings to undermine leadership structures within prison walls and beyond.

From its side, the group reiterated its commitment to pursuing justice for all Palestinian detainees and to amplifying the voices of those it says are subjected to ongoing Israeli repression. It underlined that the threats faced by Barghouti are part of a larger architecture of suppression that must be urgently addressed by the global human rights community.

In addition, the rights group warned that the consequences of any such assassination would extend beyond prison walls, potentially fueling further unrest and deepening mistrust across Palestinian communities. It insisted that protecting the lives of imprisoned resistance leaders is essential not only for their families but also for the broader national struggle for dignity and self-determination.

The statement concluded by urging media institutions, legal entities, and grassroots movements to intensify efforts in monitoring the situation and to hold Israeli authorities accountable for any actions that threaten the lives of Palestinian detainees, with Barghouti’s case cited as a matter of utmost urgency.
